CASA crowns Kim Dusseau 2009 dance champ

The Ottawa County Court Appointed Special Advocates Program held its second annual “Ottawa County Stars Dance for CASA” on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Community Market VFW Memorial Hall in Oak Harbor. The competition paired local dance instructors with local celebrities to compete in a dance-off to raise funds for the non-profit organization.

This year’s celebrity dancers were Jodi Regal, Ottawa County Auditor; Mike Bassett, owner of Bassett’s Markets; Carol Fox, Director of Youth Ministry at Immaculate Conception Church in Port Clinton; Steve Levorchick, Captain, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department; and Kim Dusseau, president of the Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education. They were paired with instructors Craig Olszewski, Timothy Nyman and Annessia Nyman of Black Tie Dance Studio in Sandusky; MaryAnn Snider of the Ballet School in Port Clinton; and Hank Fox of Class A Performing Arts in Oak Harbor, who also served as the DJ for the evening. Judge Fritz Hany was also slated to dance at the event, but his partner was unable to compete.
While a sold out audience looked on, the couples entertained the crowd with dances they had practiced for just six weeks. Former contestant Kathleen L. Giesler, Ottawa County Juvenile and Probate Courts judge, was the emcee for the evening. The judges, who took on the personas of the popular TV show judges, were former contestants County Commissioner Jim Sass as Bruno, retired County Commissioner Carl Koebel as Len, and Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Tester, who won the competition last year, as Carrie Ann. Former contestant Sheriff Bob Bratton was the host for the event.
The champion was determined by how many donations his or her dance raised. This year’s champion is Kim Dusseau, B-C-S school board president, who danced with Hank Fox. The couple performed an energetic remix of different dance styles, raising more than $800 in donations. A Judge’s Choice Award for the most entertaining performance was given to Carol Fox and her partner, Timothy Nyman, who performed a quick step.
Last year’s event raised more than $7,000 and Executive Director Kami Sayre reported that preliminary numbers indicate that this was an even more successful event. This year’s benefit was sponsored by Mon Ami, Northern Manufacturing, First National Bank, National Bank of Oak Harbor, Andy’s Party Mart, Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Tester, retired Ottawa County Commissioner Carl Koebel, County Commissioner Jim Sass, the Catawba Island Club, Great Wolf Lodge, Our Guest Inn and Jet Express.
All of the proceeds from the event benefit CASA, which provides volunteer advocates who speak on behalf of abused and neglected children whose families are involved with the Ottawa County Courts.
